There is nothing wrong at all with having a goal of attaining six-pack abs, a bodybuilder physique, or the physique of a fitness model. What is a problem is when you aspire to such goals in order to make yourself happy. It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking having a fitness model body will finally make you a happy person. Here is some news: nothing external can bring you long lasting happiness. Not a beautiful body, not a bank account full of money, and not even having the love of your life. True and genuine happiness comes from within. Don’t believe me? There are people right now who have what you’re desiring and are miserable anyway. You may even know someone like that. I’ve been told by people that they have a rich friend or know of someone who has “everything” and complains about one thing or another.
It’s not to say that you can’t have the body you desire and not be happy as well. Just keep in mind that if you’re not happy now, your ideal body will only bring temporary happiness. Sooner or later, you will be searching for something else external to bring you more temporary happiness.
Glamour Fitness is Selling More Magazines, More Supplements, and More Workout Clothes
Here is what you should do right now: stop comparing yourself to what you see in fitness magazines, television, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Many times, when you are viewing glamour fitness, they are in magazines and other media. They are in advertisements trying to get you to buy the next supplement, workout clothes, protein bars, etc. The people who have those fitness model bodies work hard for them. Really hard. Meaning, eating clean 90% of the time and they are working out 4 to 5 days a week by strength training whether with weights or their own body weight. It is a disciplined lifestyle, and if it were easy, everyone would have no problem achieving their ideal body. Let’s not forget that many of the glamour fitness bodies you see in the media are Photoshopped — sometimes to the extreme.
How to Be Free of Society’s Standards
Using those models as inspiration for yourself can help keep you on track. However, it won’t help you in any way if you begin comparing your body to someone else’s. All that will do is cause you grief and add to the unhappiness you’re probably already feeling. You can free yourself right now by learning to love who you are inside and out. Appreciate what your body can do now. Be grateful for your health, be grateful you can exercise, be grateful for each breath you take. Feeling grateful brings you more things you can be grateful for. Soon, you will be working out for the sheer joy of it and any positive side effects such as your ideal body will just be an added bonus.
Your Happy is Already There – Do These Things Starting Today
We are all on our own journeys. I am still in the midst of mine and I’m learning a lot as I go along. One of the keys to everlasting happiness and joy is to practice being positive and grateful every day. It is not always easy but the more you practice, the easier it gets and soon it will come natural to you to be happy, content, and feel joy. Here are some things you can start doing today to help:
- Start a journal and write about anything that is on your mind. It is amazing how the answers to your questions will come to you. I highly recommend reading Writing Down Your Soul: How to Activate and Listen to the Extraordinary Voice Within. This book got me back into the habit of journaling. It is therapeutic to say the least.
- Use guided meditation to get you into the habit of meditating. Our minds never turn off (except when we’re sleeping) and quieting our minds through meditation helps up to tap into that inner voice within. Just like journaling, meditation can provide you answers you’ve been needing. is a great YouTube channel with tons of guided meditation videos.
- Take a yoga class or follow along with a yoga video. I used to dislike yoga until I realized there were different varieties of it. What I enjoy about yoga is the quiet, zen like atmosphere, the stretching, and the overall peaceful feeling I have after I’m done. Give it a try at least a couple of times. Rodney Yee’s Yoga for Beginners is a great place to start.
Create the goals you want and if a glamour fitness physique is still your desire, go for it. Just make sure you work on your inner self as well.
