Scientists are saying that a gut hormone called PYY can explain why high protein diets can aid in weight loss:
PYY is released when a person eats protein-rich foods and sends signals to the brain indicating fullness.
The Medical Research Council team at University College London believe their findings could help tackle obesity.
But dieticians said much more work was needed before people could be advised to make long-term changes to their eating habits.
Anything that can aid in weight loss is music to most people’s ears but like with anything, I think all things need to be taken in moderation. High protein diets can be just as dangerous as any diet if not managed correctly. High protein diets supposedly increase the PYY hormone which in turn helps to curb your appetite, which means you would consume less food. That is great and all but I think meat eaters should be eating protein in lean meats and fish. Even vegetarians need to consume protein and that requires more of a balancing act because they need to get it in certain foods on a regular basis. Meat eaters worry less but I’m sure end up eating more meat than they probably should. It’s all about balance and the undeniable fact that you have to burn up what you eat calorie wise.
