Will New Year’s Resolutions Screw Up Your Gym Time?

First off, Happy New Year! I’m all for people making the decision to lose weight and get into shape for the new year. The new year represents a fresh start for a majority of people and getting into shape probably remains one of the top new year’s resolutions most people make. However, for those of us who have been gym members for quite awhile and go rather consistently, the resolutions can really throw a monkey wrench into our gym time.
The new year’s gym resolutions usually mean:
- Less parking
- Cardio machines are always full (20 minute rule in effect)
- Weight machines are also full
- Adjusting your schedule to miss the crowd
- Having to fight for the simplest machines
In general the beginning of the year basically sucks for the regular gym members. However, a personal trainer at my gym told me that the new year’s resolution folks generally give up by April.
Don’t give up when April rolls around
If you are one of the resolution people this year and planning to sign up to a gym, here are some tips to keep you from giving up by April:
- Don’t burn yourself out in the beginning by going to often
- Don’t do the same routine each time (boredom will set in)
- Don’t get stuck doing only cardio - incorporate strength training
- Try a few classes to help change up the routine
- Begin to make exercise a habit
- Don’t let others interfere with your workout time
The first few months will be a little crowded for the gym rats but it’s important for the newcomers to find their place as well and make exercise a habit in their lives.

Happy New Year.
I agree that gyms are going to be clogged up with newbies so will be training at home. A habit that i keep all year. Good luck to anyone starting out though.
I heard today that 1 in 10 will succeed with their resolution. Hope I’m that 1!
