What to Look for in a Gym

by Eartha

When a brand new gym opened up 10 minutes from my home I knew it would become an instant hit.  That was several years ago and it is still going strong.  When I joined, I didn't really look into the details since my family were already members.  However, for most people, choosing a gym can be just as difficult as making any major purchase.  Let's take a look at some of the things that can make or break your decision to join a gym.

Location, Location, Location
The above title isn't a typo but a definite emphasis on how important location is.  If the gym you are considering is more than 10 minutes away, you may want to think twice before joining.  Chances are as time goes by, you will not want to go because of the distance.  It is often one of the biggest excuses gym members use to stop going.  Make sure the location will not be a problem for you.

Fees
All gym membership fees vary.  Some require an up front payment just for joining and then the regulary monthly fees.  Many gyms have contracts so read the fine print and make sure you understand what you're getting into.  Also beware of the upsells.  Some gym employees earn a commission on the products they sell so they will try to sell you the biggest packages and products.

Equipment
When  you are taken on a tour of the facility check out the types of equipment they have to offer.  Are there a reasonable amount of cardio machines?  Do they have a good variety of weight training machines and free weights?  Is there enough room to find a spot to do crunches, jump rope, etc?  Look for pluses such as pools and basketball courts.  Not a necessity but great additions for changing up your routine.

Hours
How early and late does the gym close?  This is important because you need to fit in your workout around your schedule.  Are they open on the weekends?  Don't overlook this because as your schedule changes, you'll need the convenience of a gym that is open when you need it to be.

Staff and the Atmosphere
How well staffed is the gym?   Are the staff helpful and friendly?  Is there an overall pleasant atmosphere?  These are important questions because you want to feel good about the environment so that you look forward to going to the gym.  You want to be an active member - not a couch potato!

Those are some of the key things to consider before committing your time and money to a gym.  Don't be afraid to ask a ton of questions.  You will feel better about your decision and know that either way, you've made the best decision for yourself.
