I was browsing around the internet and came across a term called “roid gut.” It is a term that is known more popularly around the bodybuilding community.

What Causes Roid Gut?

From what I could find, roid gut is caused by the injecting of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) into one’s system. This hormone is naturally produced by the body. As a drug, it is used for muscle growth and unlike steroids which enlarge the muscle that’s already there, HGH begins to grow all new muscle. The “gut” part comes into play because HGH causes a growth effect around internal organs such as the heart, kidneys, and liver just to name a few. When these organs become enlarged, they cause a protrusion effect — hence, the enlarged waistline and gut that is noticeable in bodybuilders who use this type of drug.

What Does Roid Gut Look Like?

If you are wondering what exactly roid gut looks like, you can compare photos of some of the early bodybuilders of the 60’s and 70’s who had very small waistlines and flat stomachs to some of the modern bodybuilders of today (who use these types of drugs) whose waistlines are much thicker. I’m no bodybuilding physique expert but I do notice some of the difference. There is a lot of controversy that the sport of bodybuilding has changed a lot over the years because of drug use to enhance physiques.

Regardless, roid gut doesn’t sound like fun. The effects of it is yet another reason to steer clear of steroids and other harmful drugs.
