What Is A Sports Hernia?

Thankfully I have yet to experience a sports hernia. A sports hernia can occur in athletes of various sports (commonly hockey, football, & soccer.) It is caused by a weakening in the muscles or tendons in the lower abdominal wall. Symptoms include pain in the lower abdomen, your groin area, or in the testicle (for you men) and pain increases when performing activities such as running or being constantly bent forward.

It is understandable to assume that if you have strong abdominal muscles, you shouldn’t be prone to getting a sports hernia. However, abdominal muscle strength has little to do with it. It has more to do with the thickness of the muscle, which is why a sports hernia commonly develops in a thin region of the abdominal wall.

Treatment usually requires surgery if the symptoms do not go away on their own through methods such as rest, ice-packs, or anti-inflammatory medication. Of course, if you are experience any type of pain, it is best to consult your doctor to rule out any other causes and receive the proper treatment.
