Ways to Stop Overeating
It is easy to overeat, especially when you are not focusing on what you’re eating. By that I mean if you’re watching tv, surfing the net, etc. while you’re eating a meal. I have a habit of watching tv while I eat. Yes, sometimes I do tend to overeat because I’m not paying attention to my body letting me know that I am full.
Here are a some quick tips to help you stop overeating:
- Don’t starve yourself - If you are starving by the time you eat a meal, you are way more likely to overeat and you won’t pay attention to your body feeling full.
- Eat slower - It typically takes about 20 minutes before your brain signals that you are no longer hungry.
- Pay attention - This is a tough one but as you are eating, stop and evaluate how you feel. Can you take another bite? Are you feeling full now? This includes not eating while watching tv, driving, or web surfing.
- Smaller plate - You’ve probably heard this one before and it works. Use a smaller plate to give your brain the illusion that the portion is just right.
- Eat more satisfying foods - These include foods higher in fiber and protein. Basically you want to eat foods that have more volume and lower calories. Stay away from foods with high fat and sugar content.

That is so true Sally. Starving is major temptation for stopping by a fast-food restaurant. You’re more like to choose the quick fix which leads to more problems down the line.
Great points. I agree with each one, especially with a smaller plate. We just need to be aware of these factors and keep in mind that there will always be situations in which those factors will affect us..
Instead of 3 big meals per day, try 5-6 smaller meals throughout the day. By eating throughout the day, you never reach the point that you are ravenous and will eat anything. I always thought it was counterintuitive to control your appetite by “eating more” but it really has worked for me.
You are right about starving. We no longer think about how healthy our food is if we are starving. We are more concerned on eating something and getting rid of the feeling.
