BMI (body mass index) is commonly used for determining obesity as well as the risk for heart disease. A new study conducted by UT Southwestern Medical Center found that people with a larger waist-to-hip ratio may be at increased risk for heart disease.

“Our study shows that people who develop fat around the middle have more atherosclerotic plaque than those who have smaller waist-to-hip ratios,” said Dr. James de Lemos, associate professor of internal medicine and senior author of the study. “The risk was the same for both men and women who develop abdominal fat.” [Source: Science Daily]

To calculate your waist-to-hip ratio, measure between your ribcage and hip bones. Next, measure your hips around your rear. Divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement. [Source: cfnews13]

Your waist-to-hip size ratio should be 1 for men, and .8 for women.
