The Benefits of Weight Lifting

When someone who is overweight sheds some pounds they look great and others who know them take notice. However, I have noticed that people who lose weight, yet also incorporate weight lifting look healthier and more vibrant. Being toned is more than just looks. Weight lifting holds a ton of benefits. Here is a quick list of how weight lifting can benefit you:

  • Burns fat
  • Build strong bones (decrease risk of osteoporosis)
  • Increase metabolism
  • Tone your muscles
  • Can increase HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol)
  • Reduces risk of diabetes
  • Increases energy
  • Physically stronger
  • Reduce the risk of injury
  • Improved balance
  • Enhance performance in sports or exercise
  • Feel good and look good
  • Improved posture
  • Boosts your immune system

Besides the very good reasons above, it's fun! You don't need a complex weight machine or have to join a gym to lift weights. A set of dumbbells, stability ball or flat bench will work just fine in the home.

If you do belong to a gym and are intimidated by the machines, you can hire a personal trainer. A personal trainer can teach you how to use the machines and teach you proper form. I was taught how to use several of the machines in the gym and it has helped me to use good form so that I get the most benefits. If you don't already, think about adding weight training to your fitness routine.

One last note for women: Don't be afraid to weight train, you cannot get bulky from doing so! Women cannot produce testosterone which increases muscle size. Women can reap the benefits and get toned without the worry of bulking up.
