Staying Motivated and Focused This Summer

The winter holidays aren't the only holidays that can and do sabotage health and fitness goals. Procrastination is just as prevalent in the summer. Summer is the busiest time for travelling. So how do we keep our workouts consistent when travelling?

1) Know your weaknesses, learn from past mistakes: I love the quote from Tony Robbins , "the past does not equal the future." Figure out what has sabotaged your success in the past. We can anticipate the challenges that will inevitably arise and overcome them. Are you a morning person or do you tend to sleep in on vacation? Do you love cardio, but hate resistance/weight/strength training or vice versa?

2) Plan for success: have specific process goals to overcome your challenges where you have failed in the past. Know how long you are going to dedicate to exercise every day.

3) Always remember WHY: Why are you exercising? Dig below the surface. E.g. to look and feel better. Why do you want to look and feel better? Remember the pain and what you have to lose if you don’t achieve your goals. How will that affect you?

4) Have a specific workout you can do anywhere: this will eliminate EXCUSES. Convenience is key. Get into a routine before you are travelling, it will be easier to stick to it.

Great tips! #s 2 and 3 are my favorite. Planning things ahead always gets things done, and couple that with your innermost desires to attain fitness, and you’re on your way to consistency, and, yes, your dream body!

I agree convenience is so key. When you are tied up in front of a computer all day, and it takes effort to get out of work clothes, down many stories to ground level where you can exercise, the appeal of exercising loses its lust fast.

Achieving health and wellness is about making simple changes in your lifestlye that you can live with. Much of keeping true to those changes is keeping true to whatever your wellness vision is. This definitely takes planning, goal setting, conviction…and of course room for error!

Great advice… there’s no excuse if you have a simple routine you can do on a mat or towel, and a skipping rope you can pack in your bag!

Great info! Don’t forget to add music to your workouts for that extra motivation.

A collection of exercise videos can help avoid excuses. But you have to make sure you get ones at your level and that attacks your goals.

#2 & #3 are definitely important tips! I think those two tips are the most important for any type of success besides fitness. Great post. :)

Good post. We all need to be reminded once a while..But in my experience the most important tip is to incorporate some fun stuff into your routine. If people don’t enjoy their exercise, it’s just of matter of time when they end up quitting.
