The Simplest Health and Fitness Advice – Share Yours

I think everyone has at least one piece of advice to share when it comes to health and fitness. You don't need to be a certified personal trainer to share a bit of your own wisdom. Everyone learns something along their own personal journey of wellness. I'll start with a few lessons I've learned along the way, in no particular order.

1. Don't Spend Every Minute Focusing On Results

There was a time I would weigh myself every day and if I gained a pound, I'd spend the day wondering how it could have happened when I'm exercising often. It's better to focus on activity and let the results happen on their own.

2. "Clean", "Dirty", "Bad", "Cheat Meal" Foods - Plus a Steaming Cup of Guilt

I think sometimes I focus too much on labeling what I decide to eat. There have been plenty of times that I've eaten something and have made myself feel guilty for it. Part of it has come from my being used to referring to certain foods as "clean", "bad", or a "cheat meal." I have common sense and I know not to let 80% of my diet consist of junk. Eating ice cream or a burger on occasion shouldn't make me feel guilty.

3. Variety is the Spice of Life, Especially for Exercise

I need variety in my workouts in order to prevent boredom. I like simple exercises and I like finding body weight exercises and putting them together to create a circuit. I use my Gymboss interval timer to do timed circuits. Between that and P90X workouts, I'm a happy camper.

4. Your Turn

Share a bit of your health and fitness wisdom in the comments. :)

I like your point about using a variety of exercise schemes. That seems to work well for me because I get burned out too quickly doing the same movements over and over again. Also, I would like to add that exercising at the same time–for me, it’s late afternoon–helps my motivation. My body seems to be looking for it then.

Hey Wade, I used to workout in the morning and prefer it but my schedule has me working out in the afternoon now. Afternoon workouts are a nice break in my day.

I’d add this bit of advice; make exercise fun! It’s no secret that too many people start an exercise program with the best of intentions, only to quit after a few weeks or months. Face it, no matter how much people start this or that aerobics, weight training or spinning program, with the desire to get in shape, their efforts are all too often sidetracked. Many people are so busy and eventually one or another other of life’s pressures will intrude and push the workout program aside. If you make exercise something you love to do, such as basketball or tennis, it is easier to ensure that it doesn’t disappear form your life.

One more thing, if you’re trying to lose fat, hit the weights for a half hour of high intensity training. You’ll get better results than spending an hour on the bike. The muscle mass you build with an high intensity training program will overshadow the fat loss efforts you put out on a bike or aerobics class. It is all due to the long term calorie burning effects of the added muscle mass. As an added bonus, when you do lose all that excess fat, your body will look much better

My simplest advice: See each workout as a challenge, a chance to break out of your comfort zone and accomplish something you couldn’t do before. See each workout as an opportunity for personal growth. It’s a great way to make fitness more rewarding and enjoyable on a regular basis!

Good advice, Matt. I think logging your workouts helps in the challenge department. Then you can try to do better each time (more reps, heavier weight, etc.)

You’re right about that, Eartha. It definitely helps but it’s important to have that mindset that you always want more. You have to be willing to step outside your comfort zone with each workout. This is one thing I think a lot of people struggle with, but those that truly change their lives are able to do it…and love it!

Indeed, don’t keep looking for results, it can make you feel lazy when you won’t be able to find them. my advice, if you wanna work out, don’t do it tomorrow, or the next day after tomorrow, do it today! :)
