I hear all the time about protein this and protein that but I have no idea what protein really does for the body. Well, I did a little research tonight to see exactly why our bodies need protein. Our tissues, nerves, and bones are made up mostly of protein. Proteins help give structure to our cells and is used for growth, tissue repair, used to make essential hormones and enzymes.
Protein is made up of amino acids. Our bodies produce some amino acids referred to as "nonessenial amino acids". The other aminco acids our bodies need are called "essential amino acids" and must come from the foods we eat. A protein that contains all of the essential amino acids are called "complete proteins" and can be found in meat, eggs, and milk. Plant sources of protein are called "incomplete proteins" because they do not contain all of the essential amino acids. If you are a vegetarian, you can still receive all of the essential amino acids as long as you eat a variety of plant based foods.
The quantity of protein we need is 46 grams per day for adult women and 56 grams per day for adult men. You will notice a lot of protein shakes available on the market and if you see how they are marketed, you'll notice that a lot of bodybuilders drink protein shakes. Most people think (including myself until now) that drinking protein shakes will build muscle. That is not the case at all. In fact, extra protein in the body means extra calories and the excess is broken down into sugar which in turn is stored as fat.
I do like protein shakes for ensuring that I get the essential amino acids on a daily basis. I enjoy taking Jay Robb's Egg White Protein. It has no cholesterol, no sugar, no aspartame, and the list goes on. I searched for a protein shake without those ingredients and came across his product and love it. You can learn more about protein on Wikipedia.
