Powertec Utility Bench – Get the Lowdown Before You Buy

by Guest Blogger

In my opinion the Powertec WB-UB Utility Bench is a worthy investment for you home gym. It has been designed to be used stand alone or incorporated with other Powertec equipment and I like that the company also sells optional attachments, so you can do more than just barbell or dumbbell work.

The Powertec Utility Bench is part of the Workbench series of fitness equipment from Powertec. The unique concept of this range of fitness equipment is that you can buy one piece and then add further attachments as and when you need them. So, if you’d like a leg press with your bench but are not sure you need one right now or can’t afford the extra cash, you can buy this bench and add the attachment at a later date.

The bench itself is extremely well made. It’s constructed from 12-gauge steel tubing and the seat and backrest are fabricated from 2 1/2” think high-density foam covered with tough, double-stitched vinyl. It can accommodate a total weight capacity of 600 lbs – incredible for a non-commercial grade bench. The backrest can be moved to decline, flat and incline position (right up to 90 degrees, military style position). Another plus point is that the bench has a low profile. Being low to the ground enables you to plant your feet firmly on the ground when doing weight training, which means you have the comfort and confidence to lift heavier weights.

The WB-UB bench has been specially designed to be added to existing Powertec equipment in the Workbench series. An easy and secure pin-lock system allows you to add and remove the bench effortlessly from your Powertec rack or leverage gym. With the extra optional attachments that you can purchase for the bench, you can transform your rack into a complete home gym.

But, this utility bench from Powertec also measures up when being used on its own. Because of its FID capabilities it’s extremely versatile. Built-in rear wheels make moving it child’s play. Side seat handlebars also come as standard. These are really useful in allowing you to gain extra purchase when you opt for additional pieces such as the Leg Press, Leg Press and leg Dip attachments.

Okay, so it’s tough, functional and versatile but are there any shortcomings? Nothing is perfect in life and some have complained that the decline doesn’t go far enough. So, if you’re looking for absolute ‘decline heaven’ in a bench then the Powertec Utility Bench may disappoint. Others have complained that there’s a largish gap between the seat and backrest. This is certainly true but kind of understandable because of the nature of FID benches.

Few other benches can match the WB-UB Utility Bench in terms of build quality and functionality. You can compare it to what’s on offer from other manufacturers such as Body-Solid and BodyCraft and it has to be said that they can also match it in terms of quality and functionality but, for me, what makes it unique and desirable is that it has been designed to slot in and out of the other Powertec Workbench fitness equipment. The idea of building up your home gym over time is very appealing.
