The New York City marathon is over and the winners came in with fantastic times. Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil came in with a time of 2:09:53 and defending women's champion, Jelena Procopcuka, won with a time of 2:25:05.
Lance Armstrong was the celebrity to watch during the marathon and he made his goal of under 3 hours by coming in at 2:59:36. He stated that it was the hardest physical thing he has ever done.
"I didn't train enough for a marathon," he said, his right shin heavily taped as he shuffled into a postrace news conference. "In 20 years of pro sports and endurance sports, even the worst days on the Tour, nothing felt like that or left me the way I feel now."
I can only imagine how hard running a marathon is. Marathon training is no joke. I've seen marathon training schedules in issues of Runner's World magazine and it is hard work. I'm sure is it exhilarating to finish no matter what your time is. The training is intense though but what a thing to achieve!
