Learning how to cook can seem like an overwhelming task for the non-cooks out there. The good news is, it isn't as difficult to learn as you may think. I am not the best cook but I can follow a recipe and I can prepare some decent meals when I'm inspired to do so. However, even intermediate chefs may have an issue with preparing healthy meals. This is because healthy meals are often equated to being bland and boring.
How to Spice Up Your Healthy Meals
I was surprised at how easy it is to add flavor to any meal. Healthy eating is far from boring when you add some spice. The way to do this is to stock up on all types of spices. Check out the spice section of any supermarket and start adding to your basket. Basics include:
- Sea salt
- Black peppercorns
- Chili powder
- Onion powder
- Garlic powder
- Lemon pepper
There are many more to choose from but the above are the basics and will do wonders when you begin to incorporate them into your meals. Other staple items include olive oil, rice wine vinegar, sesame oil, and soy sauce.
Other Ways to Cook Besides Frying
Frying food seems to be an easy way to add texture and flavor. This is because most fried food is battered and cooked in fat. Cooking light can be done on a grill and an oven. Food prepared in a frying pan doesn't require tons of oil. Consider stir frying instead. A wok is a great pan to have on hand as it cooks on very high heat with a minimal amount of oil. Steaming is also a cool method of cooking. You can steam fish and vegetables.
Tools You Should Have in the Kitchen
If you're a new cook or want to cook on a budget, having a ton of pots and pans isn't essential to preparing a decent meal. I would recommend the following:
- Good quality knives
- Cutting boards (one for meat, one for vegetables)
- Frying pan
- Stock pot
- Baking dish (various sizes)
Of course you can outfit your kitchen with more but starting out, these are probably the bare essentials.
In conclusion, don't be afraid to add spice to your dishes. You will be amazed at how something as ordinary as a piece of fish or a chicken breast can become a tasty work of art with a little experimenting. Healthy eating CAN be delicious.
