How Come I’m Exercising and Not Losing Weight?
This is a common question for people who have decided to get fit and lose weight. You may have started off really well, exercising 3 - 4 times per week or more. After several weeks or months you become frustrated because you’re not losing weight. There are multiple reasons why this could be the case. Let’s take a look at some of the main ones:
- You’re still eating too many calories - Weight loss occurs when you burn more calories than you’re taking in. It may be that you haven’t changed your eating habits for the better. First find out how many calories you need to function on a daily basis and reduce calories from there. You can read more about calorie reduction here. Keep a food diary and log what you are eating on a daily basis. You may be surprised how many calories you are actually taking in.
- Eating too much processed junk - Many people fall for the myth that because they exercise, they can eat whatever they want and still lose weight. This is so not true. Your eating habits need the biggest adjustment when you’ve decided to get healthier. Eating too many processed foods (cake, donuts, cookies, white bread, chips, etc.) will only destroy all of the hard work you do exercising. So toss out the junk and stick to fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
- Not performing the right exercises - Don’t get me wrong, any form of physical activity is good. It’s better than being plopped down on the couch watching tv and eating chips. However, there are specific exercises that can help burn fat. Particularly strength training and interval training. With intervals, you’ll achieve more fat burning results in less workout time. It is also a lot less boring if you dislike exercising for that reason.
In my opinion, eating the right foods is the biggest issue for many people who exercise often but don’t lose weight. It is hard to change your eating habits when you’ve eaten a certain way for most of your life. It is a struggle for many but it can be done. Don’t give up!
