Heat Illnesses & Exercising

by Eartha

I had to cut my gym time short this afternoon because it was hotter than usual. I went to the gym later than I had planned and it was hot and humid. I ran for twenty minutes which is a little over a mile and a half for me. My goal was to run 2.5 miles but the heat was taking its toll on me and the gym's air conditioning isn't the best. I don't even think they use any. I know I'm supposed to sweat but it's entirely too hot on a summer day.

I've also filled up three of my 34 oz water bottles rather than just two. I have a feeling I will be consuming more water with this heat as well. Being well hydrated is even more crucial in these summer months. Some of the heat related injuries that can occur, especially if you are active, include:

Heat Cramps: These are painful muscle contractions that usually occur in the back of the calves. Heat cramps are brought on by heat, dehydration, and poor conditioning. They can be resolved with water, a cool environment, and rest.

Heat Exhaustion: Some symptoms include dizzines, nausea, vomiting, and increased body temperature. Water, ice packs, and rest help heat exhaustion. For extreme cases, IV fluids may be administered.

Heat Stroke: This is the most severe of heat illnesses and requires medical attention right away. Heat stroke can occur even in people who are not active. Some symptoms include warm flushed skin, increased body temperature, unconsciousness, seizures, and delirium. An IV drip is given and a hospital stay may be required for monitoring various organs that can shut down during a heat stroke.

It is very important to stay well hydrated in these summer months.  Drinking water can be an easy thing to forget, so keep some handy at all times, and keep your physical activities safe.
