For someone looking for a decent deal on a quality treadmill I'd suggest they seek out used equipment brokers, or ask the manager at the local mega chain gym for a contact. Many of the larger fitness centers replace perfectly well working treadmills with the latest and greatest just to stay competitive. You can probably find a very durable, commercial quality treadmill(used) at a bargain, that with proper care and maintenance will last many years longer than a brand new "home fitness model" from a department or sporting goods store.

I have seen people go from casual power walker to full on marathon runner... without stepping foot on the road. Treadmills are a fantastic way to improve your fitness and there's certainly no need to buy one first hand. All I would say is make sure it come with a safety cord so it cuts out if you do end up tripping.

A treadmill (even an old eliptical) is a great way to start off a fitness resolution. It's simple, but at the same time provides a great starting challenge for dormant bodies. Jumping rope is also a great and inexpensive way to get started.
