Bruce Lee is not only a legend in the world of martial arts but he is also well known for his physical fitness. He was known to exercise often and believed whole heartedly in physical conditioning. His belief was that many martial artists and athletes spent too much time in developing skill rather than training their physique.
Bruce also valued the importance of having strong abdominal muscles. He believed that abs are the most important muscle group, particularly for martial artists, since many movements require the use of abdominal muscles.
It is not surprising that Bruce was a fitness fanatic (some considered him an extremist.) His workouts included weight training, massive ab training, and cardiovascular conditioning. Bruce could run 2 to 6 miles in 15 to 45 minutes. He was always finding ways to push his body to the limit.
Nutrition played a key role in Bruce's lifestyle. Because of his belief in having strong abs, he began to take nutrition very seriously. Proper nutrition was one of the main ways in improving the definition of his abs.
According to Linda Lee, soon after he moved to the United States, Bruce Lee started to take nutrition seriously and developed an interest in health foods and high-protein drinks. "Several times a day, he took a high-protein drink made up of powdered milk, ice water, eggs, eggshells, bananas, vegetable oil, peanut flour and chocolate ice cream," and she claims Bruce's waist fluctuated between 26 and 28 inches. "He also drank his own juice concoctions made from vegetables and fruits, apples, celery, carrots and so on, prepared in an electric blender."
He consumed large amounts of fruits and vegetables and very little meat. He also became so knowledgeable about vitamin supplements that he was able to take exactly the right amounts (for himself) of vitamins A, B, C, D, and E.
While not everyone can train as hardcore as Bruce Lee, his training methods and nutrition still remain a fascination for many. He was a master of his craft and it is no wonder why people still admire him. I briefly glanced through the pages of his book Tao of Jeet Kune Do, however, I think there are sample workouts included.
