When I decided to start working out regularly, I made sure to invest in decent running shoes and I also purchased "gym clothes" meaning some shorts, sports bras, and well cushioned socks. I throw on a t-shirt and I feel ready to work out. Fitness apparel is a big industry and there is a reason for it. Fitness clothing is created to be functional.
They are made out of various materials and many wick away moisture from the body which is a good thing. While I am satisfied with my workout wear, I do wonder how much better my workouts could be if I invested in some good fitness clothing. We purchase specific clothing for specific reasons all the time so why should workout clothes be any different?
Benefits of Purchasing Fitness Apparel
- Most wick away moisture
- Better fit
- Longer lasting
- Stylish
- Functional
- Comfortable
If being on a budget prevents you from purchasing fitness clothing, you could try shopping around most sporting good stores. Many of them constantly have sales and tons of sales racks full of marked down items. I do notice that cotton t-shirts do nothing but soak up sweat. This tends to make me feel cold and feels like I'm being weighed down.
Overall, I think it would be worth it for me to begin purchasing more fitness apparel since I workout on a regular basis. Do you purchase fitness clothing? Is it worth it to you?

In my opinion, investing in a few “articles” of clothing is necessary if you workout on a regular basis but I agree browsing the “sale” racks is worth the effort. I will say, however, that footwear should be replaced more frequently even if no ‘wear’ is visible…especially for ‘cardio junkies’. Proper foot support is extremely important.
It is SOO worth it! You may not /necessarily/ have a better workout, but you will definitely feel better during your workout, which could lead to you upping the intensity a bit.
“Fitness” clothing has gone down in price considerably since more companies are making it and it’s now available at discount stores. I think it’s a great investment.
@Liz – Yes, footwear is very important for me since I enjoy running. I have 3 pairs of running shoes that I love and alternate between them.
@Scott – Good point about the possible intensity effect. Having the proper footwear makes me want to run a little harder so I imagine the proper clothing could have the same effect.
yes, it is definitely worth it! I can’t stand to exercise in cotton because it just clings to my sweaty self!
I have found great prices on items from Kohl’s or even Target.
I think it is essential to purchase new equipment when you start working out, not only because you need the shoes or work out clothes but also because it is so motivating to have new gear!!
