Don’t Overlook The Benefits of Sleeping

I have a problem of staying up too late. I don’t get a good night’s rest because I am usually still wired at 1 am and when I finally fall asleep, it feels like I didn’t get any rest at all. Changing my sleeping habits has been on my to-do list for quite some time. There are several reasons sleep is so beneficial to our health.
Some benefits of a good night’s sleep:
- Muscle growth occurs
- HGH (Human Growth Hormone) is released which increases fat burning ability
- Blood supply to muscles increased
- Helps restore our immune system
- Improves memory
- Improves reaction time
- Tissue repair
- More energy
- Less dependence on caffeine or sugary drinks to get through the day
Ways to get a good night’s sleep:
- Avoid caffeine at night
- Don’t exercise too close to bed time
- Use the bathroom before bed
- Sleep in complete darkness (wear an eye mask if necessary)
- Listen to music (the soothing kind - I have a cousin who falls asleep to rock music, I don’t know how)
- Take a warm bath
- Drink herbal tea
- Avoid naps
- Wear earplugs
- Invest in a good pillow
Forcing myself to sleep never works for me so I plan on waiting until I am sleepy (even if it’s 2 a.m.) and still waking up at my regular time. Getting into a regular sleeping habit with at least 6 to 8 hours of good sleep will benefit the mind and body.
