Do You Cleanse Your Body?

by Eartha

Glass of Juice on a Coaster

I'm not talking about cleansing on the outside but cleansing for the inside. I have heard about various types of cleanses and know of people who do them at least once a year. Some people perform a cleanse to help with weight loss while others use them for health purposes. I have heard of cleanses that last from 3 days to over a week or longer. Some are liquid based meaning drinking nothing but juice, shakes, etc., while others are food based (salads, fruit.)

I have never tried a cleanse but some people swear by them. I think it is important to take care of our inside just as well as our outside. That means eating well and cutting back or eliminating junk food.

Detoxing the body has been around for a long time and celebrities often bring popularity to them when they have used one to lose weight. My question is, do they really have any positive effect on the body? I read up on some dangers of following a cleanse. Some possible risks include:

  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Muscle breakdown
  • Blood-sugar problems
  • Frequent liquid bowel movements

I have also read that there is no evidence that cleansing is helpful and that our bodies do a good job on their own in terms of removing toxins.

Do you think a cleanse is important for a healthy lifestyle? Have you ever tried a cleanse?

Week six alcohol free, not a drop.

Had plateaux’d in my training abit, said id try this. Its fantastic, made far more progress than I ever have before.

Diet is sensible too obviously, but skipping the odd beer or wine is really helping.

Working for me anyway.

I personally just try to eat clean all the time, and in doing so, pretty much eliminate the need for the word “cleansing” in my diet dictionary, since I pretty much don’t need such a thing. My regular diet has a shake composed of mostly fruits and vegetables, as its core element, as I write here:
http://fitnessphp.blogspot.com/2010/04/diet-and-nutrition-tip-2-health-shake.html

I also advocate a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet, here:
http://fitnessphp.blogspot.com/2010/04/how-to-live-longer.html
though my personal version is much more relaxed than what’s in the article.

Lots of those risks you mention are pretty much because of “fad” cleanses that are more about hype and marketing than about actual, nutritional balance.

And, in any case, anyone interested in radically changing their diet, even for just a short period of time, should consult a nutritionist in order to make sure that everything is indeed balanced and that all risks are eliminated.

I personally really don’t believe in “cleansing” as they imply something that occurs only in the short term. Just make the switch to a much healthier diet composed of mostly (if not entirely) all natural ingredients. Make the swtich slowly if you have to, but keep at it and find your comfort zone. It’s there, trust me, unlike what the food fast marketeres would have you believe.

You’ll be full of energy, sleep better and live longer.

I go with natural drink all the time and diet supplements to cleanse my body as well.Investing inside rather than physical should always be first in the list.

I did not think much about it but I drink sufficient fruit juice and water everyday. Thank you for this nice article.

Instead of a full detox I perform intermitent fasting every week or so to help with internal cleansing. Basically I stop eating at about 8pm at night, and do not have another meal until 12pm the next day. I do drink lemon water during these times though.

Twice a year cleansing seems to work well for me. I don’t fast but lots of vegetable juicing and aloe vera juice. Helps with everything from increased energy to getting rid of some unwanted fat and toxin buildup.

I cleanse once a year or to help before a photo shoot. I find that it really helps with getting bloating down.

Juice fasting is one of the best ways to cleanse the entire lymph and elimination systems in the body. For those that don’t believe that death begins in the colon then you will probably never even try a fast or detox program but I can tell you from experience – what a great thing it is for you! you will feel so much better after about the 3rd cleanse!

Once our body organs are detoxified by juice fasting, we achieve a healthier body, thus, helping us fight the various diseases around us. We can conclude that nothing is better than a natural diet through juice fasting.
