De La Hoya Mayweather Workout Routine

delahoya-mayweather.jpgLast night’s episode of 24/7 gave us another in-depth look at both of the fighters workout routines. Mayweather’s workout involved some sparring sessions which left the sparring partner bruised and bloody. Most of the episode also focused on Mayweather’s personal life, in particular, his wealth and how he spends it.

De La Hoya’s portion of the episode got more into his workout routine and diet. His cardio and strength conditioning coach pointed out how they are beginning to cut back on stamina training and begin working on his speed and reaction time. This included some explosive movements and drills up and down a basketball court. His coach also cooked up some healthy burritos and a shake that Oscar seems like he is still getting used to but beginning to enjoy.

Both fighters are in top shape, however, Mayweather is known to stay in great shape even when he is not training for a fight. His weight fluctuates no more than 3 - 4 pounds of his fighting weight.

He hovers within 3 or 4 pounds of his fighting weight at all times by jumping rope, playing basketball, and doing body-weight exercises twice a week. Make no mistake: He trains as hard as any athlete on the planet for 6 weeks before every fight, but the rest of the time, he simply enjoys staying active, a strategy that’s kept him within a few hard workouts of his peak condition year-round. This HBO series is creating great buzz for the upcoming fight on May 5th. I am looking forward to it.
