There are a few kickboxing, boxing, muy thai specialized gyms that have opened up in our area. One of the kickboxing gyms really caught my eye as I could see through the window all of the punching bags and the boxing ring. My friend and I decided to go in and see what they offered and their pricing. There was a class going on already which was pretty cool to watch. The salesperson who talked to us was awful but I won't go into too much detail with that except to mention some of the things he told us that we found hard to believe.
Benefits of a kickboxing, boxing, muy thai, etc. gym:
- Fun - the classes looked like fun! Everyone had their own punching bag and the instructor was very enthusiastic.
- Smaller classes - you are not competing with hundreds of people so you always have a space to participate in the classes as well as more personal attention from the instructor.
- Learn self-defense - you are also learning fighting moves that you can use for self-defense if needed.
- Burn a lot of calories - now this is where I didn't really believe the salesperson. He stated that one class could burn 800 - 1000 calories. Regardless, I do believe you are burning a lot of calories.
Disadvantages of a kickboxing, boxing, muy thai, etc. gym:
- Expensive - compared to a typical gym membership, it was about $30 more per month.
- Weight and cardio machines - there wasn't very much variety in weight and cardio machines and too few which would mean competing with other members. I know that isn't their specialty but since I saw them there, I had to mention it.
- Not for the timid - we were told that some instructors really yell at you to get you to work out harder.
- Cost of accessories - you may need to buy boxing gloves, shin guards, etc., depending on the training, so upfront costs may be a little more.
Right now, I don't think I could make the switch from my regular gym to a specialty gym. For one, I enjoy working out when I want, how I want, and having more options. I can do cardio, strength train, or take a class.
A specialty gym is usually not open 7 days a week and you have to work around their schedule. If I really wanted to take up some form of martial arts, I would sign up for training at a real martial arts school. However, the specialty gyms are great for people who are already martial artists since the equipment is geared more towards them.
As for the salesperson, he is probably losing a lot of potential customers. He pretty much made us feel like deal or no deal. We left feeling as if we shouldn't bother coming back. On top of that, I felt bad for the couple signing up before he talked to us. I overheard him ask the guy, "When do you get paid? Are you for sure going to have the money tomorrow?" Talk about pressure!
