Muscle

I woke up to excruciating pain in my calf in the early morning. I haven't had a leg cramp (a.k.a "Charley Horse") in a long time and the pain in my calf was intolerable. I had to wait it out and tried my best to stretch out my calf but it felt like it only got worse. Thank goodness it didn't last long but it was definitely long enough. So what causes calf muscle pain during the night?

ABSolutely Shredded

I'm happy to share with you a free 6-week, six-pack abs course that was put together by Alain Gonzalez. If you are not familiar with Alain, I interviewed him back in October (click here to read interview) where he discussed how to add on muscle mass the natural way. He has added on 40 lbs. of muscle to his frame which was an incredible transformation considering that he is what's referred to as a "hardgainer."

The majority of health and fitness web sites often deal with the topic of losing weight. However, what about the topic of gaining weight? I received an email from a reader who wanted information on how to safely gain weight. It seems like the answer would be easy - just eat more. Yet, simply eating more is not the best advice. You still have to consider what you are eating and how much weight you are trying to gain.

There are a lot of guys looking to gain muscle weight who are convinced that they can't because of their metabolism. But this couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, 95% of people who claim they "can't" gain weight are just plain wrong! They are having difficulty with it not because of metabolism issues, but because of bad habits and a lack of a proper eating and training regimen.

Well, I'm going to help fix the issue for you right now, and tell you what you need to do to put on weight.

It's really pretty simple.

The basics are pretty simple. You need to eat a lot. Carbs for energy and weight, protein for muscle mass, vegetables and fruits for nutrients so everything else absorbs correctly. And of course, you have to train hard. Now, let's go into specifics...

I stumbled across a very humorous but actually cool workout video that talks about 5 must-do exercises for burning fat and building muscle. The exercises include the following:

  • Squat
  • Deadlift
  • Pull-up
  • Benchpress
  • Cleans

These exercises are great for both men and women. Whether you want to burn fat or pack on muscle, these will do the job. Personally, I don't have access to a gym to do the squat and benchpress, however, if you're like me and only have dumbbells in your home, you can still perform dumbbell squats, dumbbell cleans, dumbbell deadlift, and dumbbell bench press. I also want to invest in a doorframe pull-up bar.

Check out the video below:

In the video he really points out the benefits of the squat and deadlift. I have heard both of these exercises being called two of the best before. Here's why:

Squat Benefits

  • Squats work all major muscle groups
  • Squats burn a lot of calories
  • Squats tone up your butt and thighs
  • Full squats can increase flexibility in the lower body
  • Lower back and mid-section become stronger
  • Heart and lung power increased
  • Muscle is gained

Deadlift Benefits

The deadlift is a compound exercise and is so effective because of it's overall body development. It works just about every muscle in the body. The muscles it targets include:

  • quadriceps
  • hamstrings
  • glutes
  • trapezius muscles
  • lats
  • spinal erectors
  • abs

Because the deadlift works so many muscles, particularly your core muscles, it can help reduce lower back pain and improve posture. It is also a great fat burner since you are working so many muscles at once. With all of those muscles getting a workout, you can end up boosting your metabolism as well.

So what is your opinion on these 5 exercises?
