Fitness on TV

Chris Powell and participant

Weight loss shows are quite popular, The Biggest Loser being one of the most popular on television. Although I think the transformations are amazing, I don't make an effort to watch that show much. However, there is a new show that has started that has caught my interest. It is Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition. Unlike The Biggest Loser, I find this show to be much more heartfelt and inspiring.

Kyle

I've written about Kyle Maynard in a previous post because he symbolizes what it means to end all excuses for reaching your goals. If you're not familiar with Kyle's story, he is a congenital amputee and has managed to reach just about every goal he has put his mind to.

There is a new documentary titled, A Fighting Chance, that has been released on Kyle which follows his journey on the road to fighting in a MMA cage fight, one of his biggest dreams. In it, you learn more about how Kyle has to deal with various obstacles and how he breaks through them to make his dream come true.

Although he receives a lot of criticism for some of the things he does, he is still a very inspiring individual and proves that the only thing stopping you from reaching your own dreams is you.

kirstiealley

Kirstie Alley was on the Oprah show today and they were discussing the causes of her falling off the wagon. If you didn't know, Kirstie Alley used to be the Jenny Craig spokesperson and lost a lot of weight. She has since put on all of the weight she lost and what happened to her is nothing uncommon.

Many people have lost weight only to put it back on. Since she is in the public eye, and was recently promoting Jenny Craig, every pound she gains is scrutinized. Here are some of the things that caused her to fall off the wagon:

She Stopped Exercising

While she was still on the Jenny Craig program, she kept all of her exercise equipment in her house (dining room area) and worked out regularly. Eventually, she stored all of her equipment in her garage and stopped exercising all together.

No Longer Accountable

Kirstie mentioned that it was easier to keep the weight off when she was a spokesperson because of the pressure placed on her from the legal standpoint. She had to lose weight because of the business agreement between her and Jenny Craig. She was weighed in all the time and being under that kind of pressure forced her to meet her goals. Once the pressure was taken off, it was all too easy to indulge in the wrong foods and slack off.

How She Could Have Stayed On Track

I do think her big mistake was stopping the exercise. When you slack off on exercising, it's all too easy to regain the weight and even harder to get motivated to exercise again. Even if she wanted all of her exercise equipment out of her dining room, she should have continued to exercise.

It seemed like she did better at exercising and eating the right foods when she was under some type of pressure. Maybe it would have helped to answer to someone like a personal trainer.

One thing I noticed was that she kept apologizing for letting people down. I don't feel she needed to apologize for that at all. If anything, people who have dealt with weight issues should know where she is coming from.

Another point that Oprah made was that we usually give ourselves 5 pounds to play with. The problem is that gaining 5 pounds can easily turn into 25 pounds if you're not careful.

Did you watch the show? What do you think?

Last night's episode of The Biggest Loser was entertaining as it was the first time Jillian's team would make their appearance at the weigh-in. Both teams, including their trainers, were surprised to see the folks that were not picked in the first episode. Jillian and her team wanted to blow them away at the weigh-in but it seemed like they were cutting it pretty close when her team members appeared to be losing 2 to 3 pounds each.

The twin brothers (Bill & Jim) pulled it off in the end for the black team, which left the blue team and their trainer Bob worried about how they would compete. Neither of the trainers were thrilled to see Jillian. The red team ended up having to eliminate a member (Lezlye), however, it was really a toss up for me since Amy whined most of the episode.

Next week looks like a challenge since they will have no trainers and the temptation of all the junk food they can eat. We'll see who will crack under pressure!

Tonight was the first episode of The Biggest Loser. It was quite entertaining and motivational to watch. I felt for each team member as they shared their stories of how they got to where they are and how badly they want to change their lives.

The three trainers all seem highly motivated and tough. I have to say that Jillian Michaels seemed to be the toughest out of all three. I know she was one of the first trainers when the show started and it seems her methods haven't changed much. She had her team really working hard in the desert. I think I'd want to be on her team because she is hardcore.

All of the team members lost incredible amounts of weight within a week's time. Of course they are all monitored strictly by doctors and their trainers. I've always read that healthy weight loss ranges between 1 to 3 pounds per week. Hopefully people watching the show don't get the wrong ideas and try rapid weight loss plans which could be hazardous.

The first person voted off was Amber. It seems that everyone agreed that she wasn't as highly motivated as she could be. She even sounded as if she lacked the confidence to continue. It was good to see that she lost 65 lbs. after she left the show. It is a competition so while it is sad to see people getting voted off, I think the show gives them the jump start they need to improve their health.

I'm looking forward to future episodes. It's fun to see the teams lose so much weight and definitely inspires me to work hard too.
