Celebrity Diets & Workouts

For a long time I had no idea who Snooki was. I had heard of the popular MTV reality show Jersey Shore but had no interest in watching it. I watched an entire season of it which was enough to learn why the younger generation is probably so fascinated with this group of friends. If you are not familiar with the show, Snooki (Nicole Polizzi) is one of the more popular roommates and has recently been all over the news for her weight loss.

If you are not familiar with who Herschel Walker is, he is a former football player (regarded as one of the top college running backs of all time) and was also awarded the Heisman Trophy in 1982. He has played in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants. Herschel is also a mixed martial artist and has been signed by MMA promotion Strikeforce to compete in their heavyweight division.

Since I don't really follow football, I hadn't really heard of Herschel Walker until he was a contestant on Donald Trump's Celebrity Apprentice. I came across an article which talks about his diet and fitness program. It is probably not what you are thinking. I know I was surprised when I read about his diet and workouts. Here is how it breaks down:

  • Does not train with free-weights
  • Uses bodyweight exercises, calisthenics, and conditioning, as well as martial arts training
  • Performs 750-1,000 push-ups daily
  • 2,000+ sit-ups daily
  • Skips breakfast
  • Trains for martial arts which includes wrestling, kickboxing, sparring and jujitsu
  • Dinner is the only meal consumed which consists of salad, soup, and bread
  • He is a vegetarian
  • Sleeps four hours a night

Walker stated in an in-studio interview during BaD Radio on August 23, 2010 that he still performs 3,500 sit-ups and 1,000 push ups every day. He has been going through this same routine since high school.

His routine is definitely unique and not one that the average person would follow. Most advice says to consume plenty of protein, add a variety of exercises, get plenty of sleep and recovery. However, I do find his diet and workouts fascinating and it obviously works well for him.

Hugh Jackman is ripped and in my opinion he makes the perfect Wolverine. If you have come across his images or have seen the movie, you know that Hugh is ripped from head to toe. I'm going to guess he's always been in shape but in order to play Wolverine, he had to work a little harder to develop his physique.

I researched everything I could find on the web and what I've heard in interviews on what it took for him to get into shape.

Stats:
Age: 40
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 215 lbs. (while bulking), 200 lbs (lean for filming)

What Hugh Jackman Ate to Bulk Up

He literally had to transform his body and add muscle mass for the role. This meant he had to pack on the calories eating a whopping 4,500 calories per day but all from healthy meals consisting of fish, steamed chicken, tofu, and some steak. On the Oprah show, Hugh mentioned that his trainer placed him on a "bodybuilder diet" waking him up at 3am to eat egg whites and toast.

He was constantly eating every 2 - 3 hours, mostly protein based meals.

His Workouts

“Part of you gets really into it, the extreme nature of it,” Jackman said. “I had a picture in my head of the character looking more like Robert De Niro in ‘Cape Fear,’ I wanted him to be all veins and muscle but not pretty like some Abercrombie & Fitch model, nor did I want him to look too big like Arnold Schwarzenegger. I wanted him to look dangerous.” [Source: latimesblogs.latimes.com]

Hugh's workouts were no joke. It was all about the weights for sure and included a lot of heavy lifting and explosive-impact weight lifting. Exercises included:

  • Bench press variations
  • Barbell lunges
  • Light squats
  • Leg presses

His gym time ran about a hour and a half each day. He changed his workouts up about every 3 weeks which ranged from heavy lifting to lighter weights with slower reps and a mix of explosive lifting.

Needless to say, Hugh worked out hard and it definitely shows. Having that type of physique as well as maintaining it requires a lot of discipline with eating and exercising.

michaelphelps

If you have been following the Olympics then you have probably been watching Michael Phelp's incredible performances in all of his events. Last night was no different as he won another gold medal but what was also interesting was a short clip they showed during the broadcast that shared a little bit of what Michael does in a typical day.

Eat, Sleep, Swim
Needless to say, Phelps swims a lot. It takes a lot of dedication and practice to achieve the results that he has accomplished. Breaking world records and winning gold medal after gold medal. He eats the way most people wish they could by eating anything and everything without counting a calorie or worrying about fat. It is said that he burns roughly 3000 calories during practice and is told to eat about 8,000 to 10,000 calories a day!

He admits that he doesn't like to cook and he eats out regularly. So much in fact that restaurant owners know his favorite menu items. Check out the clip below:

VH1's Premiere Party For "The T.O. Show"

Muscle & Fitness magazine which highlighted football player Terrell Owens. I have only recently started to watch football and I know TO has quite a reputation, so whether you are a fan or not, there is no denying that Terrell Owens has one of the best physiques in the NFL. His workouts are intense on-season and off-season.

Quick facts

  • 34 years of age
  • 6'3" tall
  • 225 pounds
  • 3% - 4% body fat

All about functional exercises

One of the main things I got from the story is that every workout Terrell does relates to his work on the football field. He performs exercises which mimic blocking techniques as well as increasing his endurance for the amount of running he has to do.

How Terrell trains

During football season Terrell doesn't hit the weights as hard as he does in the off-season. He does utilize the use of resistance bands quite often which he uses for speed and core training. I have always been a fan of resistance bands because they are easy to use, easy on the joints, versatile, and can be taken anywhere. Terrell also uses them to maintain his strength during football season. He works out between 2 -3 times per week during the season.

Off-season is another story. Terrell trains more with actual weights and his workouts are intense. Between sets he even jumps rope. If you have ever done sets of anything you know getting the break in between is much needed so jumping rope as well is a lot for most people to handle. He trains 4 - 5 times per week during off-season.

Pick up the January issue of Muscle & Fitness magazine to read the entire article and for a sample off-season workout routine that Terrell's personal trainer designed for him.
