Big Medicine – TLC’s New Medical Show

by Eartha

TLC is known for having some cool health related shows on their network. They are famous for issues dealing with obesity, such as their popular documentary "I Eat 33,000 Calories." Last night, I watched "Big Medicine" which focuses on two doctors, a father and son duo, that specialize in helping obese people by performing bariatric surgery.

The first episode focused on 3 patients (Allen, Penelope, and Lauren), each with their own issues. Allen is a 700 lb. man who was getting set to have gastric bypass. Penelope actually has the surgery and you watch the emotional and physical issues that she deals with. Lauren has lost a significant amount of weight and has surgery to remove excess skin.

The two doctor's also team up with a psychotherapist who analyzes why patients are obsese and if they are good candidates for the surgery. Obesity is a problem in the U.S. and this show highlights the experience of those who choose to undergo gastric bypass. I think it will help others become more sensitive to how much of a struggle it is to be morbidly obese as well as the types of success the surgery can bring.

Big Medicine airs on Monday nights 9/8c.

Hi – First – I love this show. I find it very inspirational and it is wonderful to see the people reap the benefits of the wonderful works of Mary Jo and both doctors Davis. This show is going to save lives, so it must go on!! I also am an overweight person, from Canada. I too will have surgery. I was deeply touched by Allen who said that he has less than a handful of friends left. This has happened to me as well and I want to reach out to him and be his friend. I know what it feels like to be judged by the people you held dear and near to your heart. I hope that Allen gets this message and can somehow contact me. Take care Allen. You have a lot of friends out there, more than many handfuls – you are not alone. Your friend, Chantal
