With all of the advertising for sports/energy drinks and bars, it seems like it would be a good idea to consume either one before a cardio workout to boost energy. If your goal is to lose weight, consuming these products could be sabotaging your weight loss goals.
These types of products are best used for long periods of endurance training (think marathon training.) Having one of these products before a typical cardio workout means you only end up burning the calories you have just eaten instead of starting to burn the existing calories for weight loss. The average person usually doesn't need these products for short workouts.
The worse part is that many sports drinks and energy bars can contain a lot of sugar. That is the last thing you'll want to add to your diet when you are trying to make progress.
A wiser choice would be to eat a food item that is low calorie and healthy (an apple for example.) It's also a good idea to eat the item at least an hour before your workout to have sufficient time to digest. You'll save yourself all of the extra calories and still have the energy boost you need.
Yours in Health,
