You want to get fit and strong and you want to look good, but sometimes you just don't feel motivated to work out. Try these 5 things to keep motivated to work out, even on days when you feel like throwing in the towel:
1. Listen to music. Since the dawn of man, music has been a way to keep our spirits up and to keep us going. For that reason, I suggest you make a good play list on your MP3 player specifically to motivate you for your workouts. Music has a way of turning you from a demotivated blob into a motivated workout machine.
2. Workout with a buddy. Working out with a buddy is a great way to stay motivated to keep working out. If you know someone else is dependent on you to get in their workouts, you will feel responsible to make sure that the workout happens.
3. Mix up your routine. Sometimes doing the same thing over and over just gets too repetitive for even the best of athletes. Add some vigor to your workouts by mixing up your routine, like throwing in a kettlebell workout or adding swimming to one of your workout days.
4. Challenge yourself. If you're not feeling motivated to work out, chances are that you're not challenging yourself enough. Step back, re-evaluate the situation, check your weight, and set new goals to meet for the next month. This will help you get up and out and give a new sense of purpose to your workouts.
5. Join a forum. Joining a forum with like-minded individuals who can give you encouragement is a great way to keep you motivated and loving every step of your fitness journey. If you haven't done it yet, I highly recommend it!

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to guest post Eartha. You’ve got a great site here!
Good post @Rafi – do you know any really good fitness forum? I joined few while ago but didn’t really find what I expected
I’m always going to suggest working with a trainer- either longterm or to get started. Make sure to do your research and find a personal trainer that has great credentials and even and exercise-science related degree.
As part of the staff of a great gym in Brooklyn, I can 100% agree with the advice you give here. Working out with friends, under the guidance of professional trainers can make a huge difference in your results. Once something becomes fun, it can be integrated into a daily routine so much more easily. We become accountable to each other in a fun way, and your friends can cheer you along as you strive to meet your goals. Great post!
I love the idea of joining a forum to stay motivated. Social Networking sites keep me motivated too. If I see that one of my friends has gone to the gym on their Facebook status, I’m more likely to go myself. Does anyone else feel that way? Nice post!
Rafi, good complete article, can’t wait for your next post!
Great article! Especially about joining a forum, often an overlooked factor of sustaining motivation.
Fitness Forums, completely agree! I usually feel guilty that I’m on facebook/twitter instead of in the gym like my mates!
Great tips! Number 3 is the one that I seem to struggle with the most. I have my routine that I do, which makes it easy to get caught in an exercise rut.
Great post, and great timing. I’m actually just getting back into a regular routine again after quite a long hiatus! But I do think you forgot one thing: making an appointment with yourself for exercise. Put it in your calendar, like it’s just as important as a doctors’ appointment. I’ve got two kids and it takes a lot of planning for me to break away. And it’s so easy to make the old excuse of “not having time”. Thanks for that post!!
Yep , Number 1 keeps me up
, I always listen to music, even if I’m not working out, it makes you full of energy, nice tips too
What an idea of working out with a buddy to stay motivated to workout.Lots of good ideas here! Thanks for sharing…….
Music does it for me. There’s just something about working out to some good music that makes me feel like superman.
The two that I have to apply regularly are: Challenging myself, and mixing up my routines.
I’ve been working out for years, so I constantly am looking for new methods.
I hardly ever listen to music when I train, but I’ll give that a try and see if it does anything useful.
Great advice in this article. I would add one more. Focus on your health and medical wellness. Set goals for weight, as well as cholesterol, blood pressure and other vital stats. Keep track each time you have a physical and try to improve not only your “external” appearance, but your internal stats as well.

Great tips! You have really dig deep down inside to find something that motivates you to continue to work out. It could be family, health reasons or just plain old vanity.
I definitely agree with working out with a buddy. I find adding a little friendly competition really ranks up the motivation!
