The 2007 Ironman World Championship is approaching. The event takes place October 13th and after watching a replay of last year’s Ironman race, I became interested in which triathletes would have a good chance of winning this year. After watching the replay, two individuals were highlighted and they stand out for me as well. The first being Desiree Ficker from Austin, TX and the other being Chris McCormack from Australia.

Desiree placed 2nd in last year’s Ironman. She was also recently highlighted in the October 2007 issue of Runner’s World magazine. The article gave a rundown on her training schedule as well as a sample of her nutrition plan. You can learn more about her training and nutrition right on her web site.

Chris also placed 2nd at last year’s Ironman. He also provides training tips on his web site and the Ironman site has an interesting article about how Chris left the corporate world to become a triathlete.

Being a triathlete requires an enormous amount of endurance and requires a lot of training.  It is their full-time job.  An easy run day for Desiree is 7 miles (tempo runs at a 6:30 pace) so you can imagine that the rest of her training days are pretty intense.  An easy run for me is 1 mile! lol

We’ll see if they can beat last year’s winners Michellie Jones and Normann Stadler. I think they both have an excellent chance.  I’m not sure if the Ironman will be televised live and the only thing I found on the site was for the following broadcast of it in December:

NBC - 2007 Ford Ironman World Championship: December 1st, 2007   4:30pm-6:00pm EST
